Hardware Guide

One thing all vapers must understand is that by switching from smoking to vaping, they gain a lot when it comes to their health, but they lose some of the convenience of just lighting up a cigarette. Vaping devices are actual electronic products, with batteries, sensors and other parts that need to be used accordingly to the manufacturer’s specifications.  We are here to give you actual advice about how to use vaping hardware, so that you can using does not become a daunting experience.

While there are many types of vaping devices, we will focus on the three types that are most used on the market: vaping pods, vaping pens and box mods. These cover the vast majority of the market and all of you beginner and intermediate to advanced needs. So, which one of these are you using:

Vaping Pens

Vape pens are a natural progression from the more beginner-oriented systems. They are most often used for vaping nicotine-based e-liquids, but are versatile enough for vaping oil-infused e-liquids too. Using a vape pen is simple, even as a beginner.

A vape pen is built around a power source that heats up the e-liquid in a tank or cartridge attached to the pen, to produce vapor. They’re rechargeable battery-powered devices, usually cylindrical and small enough to carry in a pocket – that’s where the name “pen” comes from. Some of the first vape pens on the market came from Joyetech, but now you can find all sorts of vape pens on the market.

This device was a real step forward, offering larger battery capacity and longer running times, and letting the user switch atomizers or cartriges as they desired. Vape pens changed a lot of entrenched ideas about how vaping devices should look and were a real departure when compared to previous e-cigarettes, who were small self-contained units mimicking the size and shape of a cigarette.

Before charging, make sure you are using the charger that came with your vape pen. Always use a charger that fits the specs of your device.

Vape pens are charged through a USB cord and are meant to be charged like other small electronic devices, like on a computer or laptop, or even in your car. If you need a vape pen charger replacement, and you have a vape pen with a standard connection, any other standard USB cord will work. If you have a proprietary connection that threads onto the 510, you can find replacements.

Before you begin, make sure your vape pen is fully charged. The higher the mAh rating of your battery, the more life it has, but it may take longer to reach a full charge.

If your vape pen is button-operated, then click the power button five times in rapid succession to turn it on or off. When vaping, press the button while inhaling and not quicker — otherwise the vapor might become too hot. Some vape pen batteries are automatic, which you don’t need to press on any button. Most vape pens have a cut-off time of about 10 seconds so you can’t draw for longer because they will just shut off mid- puff.

Other vape pens may have some additional features like variable voltage. Usually three rapid clicks adjust voltage, which is indicated with the use of different LED lights. Looking into the manufacturer’s manual to find out the exact voltage specifications of your device. Ideally, you should start on the lower settings and go up from there.

E-liquid vape pens can be broken down into two categories: mouth to lung (MTL) and direct to lung (DTL) vapes. Mouth to lung vapes have a tight draw similar to smoking, direct to lung vape pens provide more airflow and produce bigger and denser clouds.

Most vape pens are refillable, and use replaceable coils. They can be filled with the e-liquid flavor of your choice.

The mains steps to starting your vaping pen for the first time:

  1. Start by filling the tank of your vape pen with your favorite liquid. Make sure it doesn’t overflow.
  2. Put a few drops of liquid on the coil, then give it at least 5-10 minutes to allow it to prime.
  3. Take a small puff then exhale, you don’t need to hold it in for long.
  4. Take breaks between puffs to see how it affects you.
  5. When the flavor starts tasting burnt, it’s time to replace the coil. Better yet, replace your coil every 2 weeks or more often.
  6. Make sure your device is turned off when putting it in your pocket.

Remember: your device is electronic, so it needs a certain amount of care. Here are some tips for proper maintenance:

  • Clean the threads of your vape pen periodically using isopropyl alcohol.
  • Keep the mouthpiece sanitary; use a case if necessary to prevent dust and dirt from getting in to your mouthpiece.
  • Keep battery out of extreme hot or cold temperatures, use an appropriate charger and pay attention to battery safety.
  • Make sure your coil is always fresh, keep spares on hand.
Vaping Pods

A pod is a vaping device with a portable system that doesn’t have a traditional tank or atomizer. Instead, it has a pod that is inserted into the body of the device, which contains e-liquid. These devices are often described as “all-in-one” or “AIO,” because they include everything you need for vaping: the cartridges with the built-in coil, a wick, and e-juice. You won’t need to attach a tank or atomizer, because a pod system is a self-contained device.

Average pods can hold anywhere from 1 mL to 3mL of e-juice, which works well for regular vape sessions. These devices run a bit larger than the slim and compact e-cigarettes on the market, but they do tend to be quite a bit smaller than a regular device.

There are refillable pods, where you can refill the cartridge once it has been emptied, or pre-filled, where the cartridge is single-use. There are much fewer usage indications when it comes to vaping pods than compared with vaping pens, because the cartridges contain already the wick and the coils which are a source o maintenance worries. That also makes using them much easier: pods have the mouth-to-lung inhalation which is common for cigarette smokers: first, you draw the vapor into your mouth and then inhale. There’s no wonder these pods are popular among beginners who are looking for a vaping experience as much like smoking as possible.

So deciding whether to use a vaping pods is less about whether you can manage them or not (since they are very manageable), and more about deciding between the pros and the cons of using vaping pods.

  • Compact design: most pod devices are smaller than others on the market. Thanks to the design, it doesn’t require much space to carry it.
  • Ultra-portable: as pod vapes are smaller and there’s no need to refill them, they are easier to carry.
  • Easy to use: pod devices have an intuitive design that allows users to vape without making much effort.
  • Maintenance-free: one of the benefits is that pods use less e-liquid per day, so they are cost-effective.

  • Low battery life: the battery capacity hints at how long your device can last before needing recharging. And when it comes to pods, the batteries have capacities of around 300 mAh while box mods tend to have 650 mAh. The bottom line? Get ready to charge your pod device more often.
  • Limited flavor choices: one of the reasons for using vapes is a possibility to enjoy flavored e-liquids. However, if you want to buy a pod, you should know that the variety of flavor choices is limited, although that can be solved by using a refillable catridge.
  • Less vapor: pod devices don’t produce much vapor, so it’s not the best choice if you value vapor production and clouds.
  • Price: when you buy a pod,you pay a higher price for the convenience of use. So, the device cost can be higher than the market average.

For vapers that want a balance of affordability, convenience, and performance, and are looking to upgrade from vape pens, vaping pods are a definite option. These systems are capable of providing an excellent vape experience, while still keeping cost and hassle down.

Box Mods

A box mod is among the most powerful vaping devices. They are usually larger in most ways compared to other devices in many ways including size, shape, and function. The larger shape leaves more space for batteries and coils, which are usually bigger-capacity and thus with more performance.

Because of the larger capacity of box mods users can create huge clouds of vapor and more powerful hits.  Since box mods are typically larger than other vaping devices, users can switch between different types of batteries, atomizers, and tanks, and create many different customizations of the device. Because of this potential for customization over other types of devices, box mods have become very peopular, especially for vapers who are more advanced and are looking to adjust the vaping device to their style and needs. The most common configuration for a box mod starter kit would be a single-battery mod with variable wattage and temperature control capabilities, paired with a mid-range sub ohm tank.

Box mods exist for those seeking to find the ideal vaping device and who are not satisfied by what they can find on the market. Whether alternating between the level of intensity of a throat hit or just having an extensive collection of atomizers for different occasions and types of concentrates, you can do almost anything with a box mod. The box mod works similar to other vaping devices using a battery, especially vape pens. It has a battery that heats up a coil. The coil is located inside of a separate atomizer that is attached to the box mod. When this coil is heated, vapor is created that the user then inhales. This process can differ depending on what type of atomizer is attached to the box mod. There are many accessories available for box mods, so it depends on you to choose the right version for you.

While box mods are usually for intermediate to advanced vapers, using them can be a fairly uncomplicated process, as long as you follow the right steps. The process: insert your e-liquid or pod into the vaporizer and then ignite the atomizer, usually by the press of a button. Make sure that your atomizer and e-liquid are compatible and the heating temperature is not too high and won’t burn the hit..

Start at lowest wattage and then go up

They often have high battery capacity, making them great for long trips and outdoor adventures.

Disassembling the device and powering it down at night can increase longevity and the new look and feel of your piece.

If you want to be able to have access to the full array of e-liquids available to you, update to a glass tank

Mods are, at their simplest, high-powered versions of e-liquid pens. Box Mods have become very popular among vaporizer enthusiasts due to their customizable nature, and their ability to produce massive clouds. A mod, either mechanical or electronic, is one of the easiest and most flavorful ways to smoke, and has grown in popularity for good reason. The specifications and capabilities of batteries and tanks can vary greatly depending on the type of mod. With so many options and builds to choose from, mods offer a DIY satisfaction to users who want more power and fun than typical vaporizers can provide.
